A couple of days ago, when I arrived home after a short trip I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the left side exhaust. It continued to billow out for a couple of minutes after I'd switched off. This did not occur when I drove the following day but I called the local dealer to report the matter. The service department said this can occur if/when oil builds up in the exhaust. When this happens, the presence of oil is detected by a sensor and it is automatically burnt off / blown free. Of course, it usually happens when you're driving along and so you don't notice anything.

I'm guessing your car was doing a regen where it burns off the soot. Usually does it after driving for 50 / 60mph for a least 30 minutes.
